Getting it All Straight…

So it occurs to me that I really ought to figure out a nice, quick way to answer people when they ask “So what is your book about?” The truth of it is, I still feel like a bit of an ass talking about it…not because I’m ashamed of it – but I’m still that uncool kid back in high school. When people ask that question, I get the feeling they’re hoping I’m going to give them some sort of “literary” answer that they understand. (And maybe I ought to just come up with a nice elevator pitch or something. “Rebel Without a Cause meets Sound of Music”?) Most of them aren’t genre readers – not even fantasy/sci-fi that I could at least strike out some common ground with. Sure, they’re excited I’m getting pubbed, but mention the word Faery and suddenly I’m relegated back to “dork” status. Usually I…

Is There Something You’re Not Telling Me, Thomas?

Yeah, okay. It struck me funny. And don’t blame me, I was a the train show for half the day, sweltering in the 90 degree heat. And my kids were massive Thomas the Tank Engine fans for several years, so I have quite a few of the trains lying around the house. I’m sure HO stands for something, but given that they were selling Spencer for $60, I’m not sure the description isn’t apt. I’d damn near have to prostitute myself to buy the rest of them for that price. The rest of the train show was actually pretty fun – they had the Civil War** re-enactors there (given that I basically live on a battlefield, this makes a lot of sense.) They kept lighting off the cannon every 15 minutes or so, but it was pretty cool. This year they also had a massive moon-bounce and other assorted fun,…

This week has been a bit crazy as far as the emotional ups and downs go. (Some of which I’ve already extrapolated upon in the blog, and some of which will remain neatly private.) If I’ve been an insane grudgefuck of a girl to anyone out there this week, then I deeply apologize. Lord knows I went off on my kids last night, a fact for which I am not particularly proud. (We did make up afterwards, which was nice, but not really a position I wanted to be in.) I shall endeavor to be better next week. At any rate, I’ve been debating on the wisdom of a few things – my official author site is currently being developed – should hopefully be finished by the end of the month. I’m trying to decide if I should just fold this blog into it, or keep it separate. Mostly because I’m feeling…

Weekend in a NutShell

Connor likes pie. I know this because all he’s been singing lately is this little ditty about “I like pie! You like pie! Mama likes pie! Daddy likes pie!” Which is a blatant lie, by the way – I detest pie in all its sordid forms. Maybe chocolate pie is okay, but I won’t touch it if it has a fruit filling of any kind. And today on the way home from Great Country Farms, I got to listen to him sing the pie song to the theme of The Go Go’s, “We Got the Beat.” It went something like “I like the pie. I like the pie. I like the pie. Pie pie pie pie!” Yeah. Anyway. So Saturday morning I tried my new Star Wars pancake molds – and they are totally awesome. Yoda’s ears have a tendency to break when you flip them over though, so just…
