Perception

I had to go bathing suit shopping tonight. Well, actually, I really had to go suit shopping for Lucy, but I figured I’d see if I could find something new for myself. It seems to get harder every year and even though they now sell things as separate pieces, the upper half styles just aren’t particularly flattering on me. Regardless of my current age, for some reason my head still seems to want to picture myself how I was back in high school – all 110 pounds of me. I was an athlete and decently tan and even if my Jersey hair left a little something to be desired, I usually felt pretty good about myself. So there’s always a measure of suck to have to try on clothes and realize that I’m about 20 pounds past that time – to have to see the places that sag and bulge… Read more

Happy Mother’s Day…for Vampire Slayers?

I’ll admit that when mr myn showed me the hair brush dagger online a few weeks ago, I said it was kind of cool. You know, in that  – yeah that’s nifty, but what would I do with it voice? Well, sly and crafty man that he is, he bought one for me. And I’ll admit, it really is pretty cool from a self-defense view point. It doesn’t stand out as a weapon. Even though it’s not actually bladed with a cutting edge, I could easily imagine oh…slamming it up the chin of an assailant and into their soft palate. Or an eye. Or in the ear. Or neck. It’s very pointy, is what I’m getting at. It’s made of carbon, so there’s no metal of any kind on it. From a writer’s point of view, the first thing I thought of was – hey, someone could get by security with this!… Read more

Early Morning WTFkery

I found myself looking through old ads the other night – those sexist ones from the 50s? Yeah, I thought they were pretty amusing at first, but as I delved a little further, I found plenty more and then it started to piss me off. So, I figured I’d post a few of them here. (That and I spent most of yesterday completely offline for various reasons, the main one being massive amounts of editing. Probably going to be much the same time today.) 1) Hmmm. Yeah. Blow it in her face dude. 2) You *have* to click on the picture link here and read the fine print. It’s fucking unbelievable. 3) Yeah, we’re pretty useful all right. Let me just get back in that kitchen and make you some pie. 4) Okay. I don’t even know what this is supposed to be selling. (But there were many ads showing… Read more

When the Words Die.

When I was in grade school, I really adored this series by Tom Deitz. It was sort of Urban Fantasy before UF actually became a genre – essentially the Sidhe in Georgia, with a few hapless mortals tossed into the mix. And yeah, it came out in 1986. I was in 6th grade.(I’m old!) I probably reread those first 4 or 5 books over and over again through the years, and every once in a while a new one would come out and I’d snatch it up. (I think the last once came out in 1998 – but the series had slowed down considerably by then, only coming out every few years). Times were different then. We had no internet, so I didn’t usually find out about new releases unless I physically showed up at the book store. I think we’re all a bit spoiled these days – 30 seconds… Read more
