Page Count
Even aside from all the issues I’ve had this summer, I had long expected to have this current WIP in to my agent months ago. But the editing road of the panster can be a tricky one and I appear to have added about 100 pages to it in the last few months. Which seems like an awful lot. If I hadn’t, I’d probably be done with the manuscript by now…but I’m only halfway there, as a result. However, those pages need to be there. As most of you know, pacing is pretty important when it comes to a book. Too slow and you lose your audience to snoresville. Too fast and the payoff feels cheapened. (The protag has to earn what she gets – and in my case, things were lining up a little too conveniently. Time to shake it up a little, right?) Plus, it’s written in 1st…

Membership Has Its Privileges
It’s that time of year again – membership renewals. I belong to a fairly large number of writing organizations. Even though some of the renewals aren’t all the expensive – $25 – $35, some of them are upwards of $80. When you add it all up, it starts getting pretty pricey. So then I have to weigh out if it’s worth renewing or not. It’s a tough call because I’ve been a member of a number of these groups for years now, but when I really sit down and look at it, I haven’t been taking advantage of the things they offer for quite some time. (Not to mention that I have to wonder if I *want* to be a member of some of those groups anymore – e.g. SFWA. I’d already renewed before that last major issue so I’m still here for now. Besides, I’d like to think that…

Notes of a Dubious Nature
I was cleaning up a little bit the other day and it occurred to me that family members of writers probably stumble on some pretty weird things. Most writers I know have been asked the “Are you all right?” question when said writer is staring off into space. I do this a lot – and usually it’s because I’m writing in my head. Or playing out a scene between characters or whatever. (Hmmm. What happens if I just make everyone naked?? Bet that ping-pong tournament gets way more interesting.) It’s fairly common phenomenon, as are the google searches for things like how long takes someone to die after they’ve been run through with a sword. Writers can be very scary people, yo. I rarely write things down on paper – except when I get stuck. For this latest book, I’ve been writing things down like mad – which should probably…

Rambly
A bit of a late night post tonight. Things got a little nutty today at work and I couldn’t sneak in a post during lunch like I usually do. Happens sometimes – and technically I’m cutting into some of my writing time tonight to post. There isn’t even any real reason for it – I just feel like rambling a bit – and also? The origami book dragon there is totally awesome. 😀 But honestly I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed the last few days (and massively crankypants). Just a lot going on in author land. It’s not always about writing, you know? I’ve got some cons coming up so now there’s a bit of a scramble as to what new swag I want to order and plane tickets to get and people to contact about getting on panels or workshops or whatever. Do I want to place an ad…
