So it’s been a while since my last post – lots of things going on I suppose. Some good, some bad, some I’m not entirely sure about. We’ll start with the good – which is mostly involving travel – since the last few years were not great pain-wise, we’d had to push off any sort of family trips and whatnot, and though I’m still not entirely “good” I was “good enough.” We finally hit up Disney World for a few days, went to Katsucon, started looking at maybe renting an RV over the summer to take a few weeks to drive across the country. (Will it happen? Who knows, but it’s fun to look.) I am *hoping* to possibly do some more travel in general – I’m actually tentatively scheduled to hit a con in July. (Camp NeCon, to be specific. It’s a smaller con and mostly writer based, but it…

Creatively Uncreative
A billion years ago I took a creative writing course in college. And I pretty much hated it. Mostly because everyone in it was a lit major…and I wasn’t. I became a sort of pariah because I wanted to share passages from stories by Charles de Lint or Peter S. Beagle, instead of the proper sorts of “literary” works. In short, I was a genre-monkey – and hearing the professor compare my writing to that of Tolkien was both laughable and sad. Honestly, it’s because no one in the class had any frame of reference to anything fantasy/sci-fi and Tolkien was at least “acceptable” so, there you go. Neither here nor there – genre is what I like reading, and what I like writing – so when I got a call from Connor’s creative writing class teacher last year to come in and chat with her students about…well, whatever it is…

Tangled Threads
I’ve been picking up my sewing in the evenings over the last week or so. Part of this is because I so rarely seem to find time do it. Since I’m waiting on feedback from my agent, I decided a few days of guilt-free crafting was deserved. As hobbies go, it’s definitely one that doesn’t feel worth it unless I have at least a solid hour or more – it’s very frustrating to get everything set up and finally get into that rhythm only to be interrupted 15 minutes later. (And don’t get me started on “distractions” like the TV – as background noise, it’s fine, but if I’m actually trying to watch it, it becomes a disaster – lots of counting mistakes when I’m not paying attention to where I am in the pattern. There is nothing more heartbreaking than getting 2/3 through a big sewing project only to…

So we all survived the winter storm, more or less. Not that 30 inches is anything to sneeze at – but we didn’t lose power, and quite frankly that was the one thing I was really worried about. The kids were off of school for over a week, but aside from that, everything was pretty good. No harm done. Not sure if we’ll be getting anything else this winter or not, but I’ve about had my fill of precipitation at the moment. It’s cool with me if we move right into Spring now. In the meantime, I’ve been editing away on this new(ish) book. Finally got that out to the agent the other night, and I’m giving myself a few days to not look at anything of my own. Beta reads for friends, absolutely, but I’d gotten to the point on my own manuscript where it seemed like everything sucked.…

Reflections
So first, Happy New Year and all that – though to be honest with the oddly warm weather we’ve been having I can’t say it’s felt much like winter, let alone the holidays. I know we don’t always get snow in Virginia for Christmas, but I’ve been ready to go into hibernation mode for weeks now…and instead I’m wearing shorts. It’s messing with my head a bit. But in all the usual holiday chaos (which is still going on in the form of constant movies, video games, family, cooking and what-have-you) I’ve retreated to the spare bedroom to get anything done – for a number reasons. First, I’ve got a real craving for natural light recently and the setup here is good for that. More importantly is the chair which can recline. Not sure what’s going on with the back these days but I’m having a lot of trouble sitting…
