Word Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday

Posted in blog | Tagged , , | Leave a comment
I’ve been slacking off on the daily blogging again, for which I apologize – but it’s just been about lack of time more than anything else. Writing is happening, projects are moving along – I’ll be scarce next week since I’m heading out of town for a little family vacation and I tend to like to unplug as completely as I can for stuff like that.  Plus, hey – it’s Disney World and Harry Potter – and I need all my attention on that. 😀 In the meantime, today has it’s usual F&W update, so check that out. Also, today on Word Whores I talked a bit about collaboration and some of the good and bad things I’ve gone through. I’ve always skirted around talking about one particularly bad experience, and I don’t think I’ll ever go into massive specifics about it, but it’s enough to know that I have… Read more

Inspiration

So if you follow me on Facebook or Tumblr at all, you probably saw me post this lovely drawing by Lucy yesterday. Yes, it’s a heart taking a poo. I don’t particularly understand her logic behind why it needs to take a dump in an outdoor toilet, but 6 year old minds are a wonderful puzzlement. Maybe it’s a statement about love. On the other hand the rest of her journal is full of stories and pictures that make me think she’s going to be a romance writer. Yes, there are pictures of ninjas – several of them, in fact, but she was very excited to share one of the stories last night involving a little boy who was bullied. (Complete with pictures of children lining up and kicking the boy. The children all have huge shoes. Perhaps they are Dutch?) Eventually the little boy meets a girl who is… Read more

Motivation

I’ve always said I’m a 1000 word a day writer. (At least on work days.) At the very least, that’s what I strive for as a bare minimum. And to be honest, after a full day of work and  the kids stuff, sometimes it’s been a struggle to get that done – recently in particular. Without a deadline, I’ve got to kick myself in the pants more often and sometimes it becomes a little too easy to just “skip it tonight. Make it up tomorrow.” Which, of course – rarely happens. I may get my 1000 words in the next night, but I’m probably not getting more than that.  And it’s sometimes a slog. I’ll start writing around 10 PM and then before I know it it’s midnight or 1 am, and I’ve only got 500 words.  I’m probably my own worst enemy though – too many willing distractions online… Read more

Word Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday

The theme this week on Word Whores is about taking sick days from writing – eg. if you’re sick, do you still try to make  your word count that day? Or is it a lost cause that better serves you by taking the time off and resting? I suspect there’s no right or wrong answer here – it’s really down to the individual and the situation. That said, I’m definitely not a fan of beating myself up over not being able to get something done because my head’s on fire. No sense in playing a martyr – it becomes tiresome after a while, so I usually try to just make a decision and stick with it. Makes the guilt that much easier to deal with if I’m not going to get a word count in that day. New Fox & Willow up today too, so go check that out.  🙂… Read more

Word Counts

I tend to make a big deal when I hit the 50k mark of a WiP – even though in means I’ve still got a long way to go. It’s a mental hurdle though, because it usually means I’m hitting that half-way mark. It’s all downhill from here. (Although in this case I’m not sure it is, but I’ll pretend it is, for the sake of argument. In truth, I think I’m aiming for another 70k, but I also need to leave some room for editing – there’s a lot of world building additions that are going to need be added/smoothed out, many of which I’m thinking about as I go.) But it’s nice to get there either way. I’ve got an actual story in play now, with plots and characters that I’m getting to know, so that always makes the rest of it a bit less intimidating than the… Read more
