Mini Game Roundup

Posted in blog | Tagged , | Leave a comment
It occurs to me I’ve been sorely neglecting my overall gaming activities, but I have been fairly busy, so when time is at a premium, the video games tend to get put on the back burner. That being said, I have hit up a few in the last several months that I thought were pretty interesting, so here goes. Incidentally, I tend to flit from game to to game depending on my mood, so I haven’t finished all of them, but I will get around to it. Unravel – I’ve only played the first two levels so far, but I love it. It’s nicely challenging without being massively frustrating, and the soundtrack is very soothing. Not to mention the graphics, which are also lovely. The concept is great too – as an enchanted piece of yarn (aka “Yarny”) you enter photographs to collect a family’s memories.   LEGO Marvel Avengers  – I… Read more

Out of Tune

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , | 1 Comment
So just a little post today to mention I’ve got a short story coming out in the upcoming Out of Tune Book 2 Anthology in May! 🙂 Like the first volume, each story is based off of folk songs  and murder ballads of various origin. Mine is loosely inspired by the Yeats poem The Stolen Child (which counts as a song, since it was set to music by Loreena McKennitt several years ago). Although the idea looks like it would be a good fit for a Melanie/Abby story, it is not – this is a standalone piece. (Sorry Abby fans, I know you’re hoping for more – I am too.) Entitled Respawn, Reboot, it actually has more to do with playing MMORPGs and the way that online games have a tendency to suck us into an alternate reality. There’s a bit of a horror twist to it as well, but I… Read more

Game Round Up

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , | 2 Comments
Not sure if I’ve done one of these ever, but figured I might as well talk a little bit about what I’ve been playing recently. I never seem to have enough free time to really play much these days and I tend to feel guilty about it when I do (shouldn’t I be doing something productive?) so it’s rare I get hours of uninterrupted time. That being said, my attention span for games is not what it used to be and I find myself often getting bored pretty quickly. (The above pictured art is by the lovely Aimo, as always.) So, what have I been playing? Well, I’ll start with the October time frame and work my way forward: 1) Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, 20th anniversary edition – this is a remake/reboot of the original. I played this way back on my Pentium 60 with its 400 meg… Read more

Trust No One

And here you probably thought this post was about the X-Files reboot. 😉 Alas, no – though I’m not above snagging a bit of the original opening credits to use for a picture. I suppose it would also apply to the recent kerfluffle from the romance writing world involving a certain blogger/author, but to be honest, I don’t know that much about it and I’m not particularly interested in weighing in on it. In this case, I’m actually speaking from a gaming perspective, specifically navigating the murky waters of online interaction, particularly when it comes to kids. Bullying, of course, comes in many forms – it’s been around forever – but the way in which it’s done has clearly changed. With the advent of social media, things can go viral in mere seconds, guaranteeing humiliation can live on for a very long time. As much as I was bullied growing… Read more

Hacked

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , , | 2 Comments
Today has been one of *those* days. Which started last night, about 1 AM. I was actually being good – editing as opposed to farting around on tumblr – until I got an email just as I was about to head to bed. My NWN MMO account had been hacked. Now, I’m a veteran of MMOs. I don’t click links I shouldn’t click and I keep my nose clean and my passwords tight. But however the person got it, the reason I found out was because PWE sent me an email indicating that they’d had a request for a new email address to be connected to my account. But instead of letting me confirm this particular request, they sent the confirmation to the NEW email address. Which was some bogus hotmail account. The icing on the cake is that I got this notification about 30 minutes AFTER the request was… Read more
