Pieces of Me
I suspect the title of this blog post is far more poetic than the actual content will be. I debated saving it for something more emo and angst filled, but eh. Sometimes writing those sorts of posts are cathartic…but sometimes they are really whiny sounding too. Anyway, I’ve been pretty slammed the last few days – work has picked up in a crazy fashion, leaving me very little time for anything else during the day. School stuff kicking in for the kids. Web/graphic design stuff – funny how it’s either feast or famine for this. Crickets forever and then bam! Everyone wants a chunk of my time for something – site redesigns, shirt designs, plug-in creation…just crazy. (These are good problems to have, however.) Add the nightly writing sessions, plus a beta read or two and there goes the rest of my sanity. Even all my errands are out to…

The last few days have been a bit crazy at home – we’ve been checking out potential private schools for the kids, so that’s taken some time. Not sure if we’re going to send them or not, for a number of reasons, but both the DH and I agree that what the kids are currently learning in the public school is pretty awful. I get that teachers have very little control over the curriculum – they have to teach to the SOL tests so that the schools continue to retain funding, but it’s a shit system. Basic stuff like grammar and spelling have completely fallen by the wayside. For kids who pick writing/reading up naturally that may not be such a big deal, but I’m getting a first-hand look at how much of a disservice this is when I read some of essays that are coming home. To complicate matters,…

Obviously I’ve been off the radar for a little while. Holiday stuff, mostly. Cleaning, baking, wrapping – all the usual trappings of family and food and too many people in close contact with each other for too long. Gifts that didn’t quite cut it. (Or in my case, gifts that didn’t happen. Seriously? I pre-order a specialty book for someone mid-November – signed, numbered and all that…knew it would get here after Christmas because it was a special order, etc…and just found out today that the website had the wrong god damned picture on it and they don’t have the special edition after all…and those special editions are sold out now everywhere else. *sigh*) And then there’s the laptop. See, my faithful little netbook is over 3 years old now. It’s slow. I spilled tea on it about 6 months ago. While it was still on. And now the Ctrl keys don’t…

Friday Updates & Sundry
First off, I want to give a shout out to the World’s Biggest Bookstore in Toronto (and specifically Jessica Strider) for setting me up with a very nice display! (And go here for the matching interview, which can also be read at the display.) And again, sorry for not blogging as much recently. Sorta taking this month as a bit of a break, but I’ll be back on the ball starting in January. By the way – I owe some contest winners their books – I should be getting all those out on Monday. Got a ton of stuff to mail out, just gotta put it all together. I was over at Word Whores yesterday talking about how you know when a story is “done.” (Ha ha – if only it were that easy. Sometimes it really is a gut thing.) Fox & Willow was updated yesterday as well –…

Cleaning House
I ended up doing a lot of house cleaning this weekend. I’m not close to being finished, but I’m an indifferent housekeeper at best, so there’s an awful lot to go through. (I can walk into my laundry room now, so yay for small victories.) I’ve had a lot on my mind anyway, but the holiday season always ends up stressing me out for various reasons. So, cleaning it is. Or really, throwing stuff away, which is just as cathartic in some ways. Though somewhat painful too, since I decided I was going to go through *everything* – and that includes a number of boxes that I haven’t touched since my mom died. So, yeah – cheery thought, I know, but I’ve been oscillating back and forth the last few days between something like relief and a mega shame-spiral over the book thing. (Which I realize is silly, but there it…
